Traveling can be a challenging experience on one’s own, but air travel becomes a daunting task with kids. However, with little air travel tips, planning and preparation it can be a breeze.

Here are some tips and tricks for smooth air travel with kids. Remember that no matter how well you plan, there may still be unforeseen obstacles along the way.

1. Choose the Right Flight and Seats

When booking your flights, try choosing the time that best work for your kids. If you have made a connection, look for a layover with plenty of time to get to your next flight. Book your flight as early as possible, preferably several months in advance. With this you will have plenty of time to plan and prepare for your trip. Additionally, early booking may allow you to secure better seats at lower fares. When selecting seats, sit together as a family, and choose a bulkhead seat or an aisle seat for easy access to the aisle and restrooms.

As kids would be sitting for long periods, dress up your kids in comfortable clothes and shoes. Consider layering their clothes as the temperature on the plane can vary. Lightweight jackets, cardigans, blankets can be a good idea as they can be easily removed or added. Many airports have a policy to remove shoes during security checks. For convenience slip-on shoes would be the best option. Slip-on shoes also help kids to wear them quickly to restrooms.

4. Online Checking and early boarding

For international air travel, Airlines provide a check-in option online 24 hours before the flight. Getting check-in online will help to avoid long queues at the airport. It will also give you more time to get settled and comfortable with your kids before boarding.

Talking on boarding, Airlines also provides an option of early boarding for families with kids. Taking advantage of it will give you more time to be settled and prepare for the flight.

5. Keep Them Entertained

Long flights can quickly become monotonous for children, making it essential to keep them entertained throughout the journey. About their enjoyment and engagement, it’s advisable to bring along a variety of activities, such as coloring books, puzzles, or travel games. The available entertainment options on the in-flight screen are bit limited. Therefore, a convenient solution is to load electronic devices with their favorite movies or shows. This way, they can stay engrossed and entertained at all times. Additionally, consider purchasing wired headphones for kids, as the airlines provided earphones may not fit their ears properly.

6. Prepare for Takeoff and Landing

The changes in air pressure during takeoff and landing can be uncomfortable for kids. Particularly infants, feed them or give them a pacifier during these times to help with ear popping. Have you handbag with Lollipops, Gummies, etc. to provide them something to chew on.

7. Always Stay Hydrated

Encourage your child to drink plenty of water during the air travel to stay hydrated. Having a Refillable water bottles are the best option, as they be filled after passing security. If you have a layover, re-filling the bottles before the landing will help keeping kids are hydrated.

8. Use a Baby Carrier or Sling

If your child is an infant or a toddler, consider using a baby carrier or sling to keep them close and calm during the flight. They would also free up your hands to take care of other things.

9. Don’t Forget About You

Remember that you’ll need to take care of yourself too. Bring a book or download a movie that you can watch during the flight. Use noise-canceling headphones to block out noise and to help you sleep.
